The One That Got Away
I became aware of the whining first. Praying it was only a dream, I knew better. It was the basset
waking me for his nightly outing. As I staggered around the dark bedroom in search of warm clothes,my heavy jacket, and muck boots, I tried to convince the hound he wasn't worth it. He knew better and I knew he knew better."Geez Flash, there's a foot of snow on the ground." He wagged his tail back at me, unconcerned with the weather conditions. I looked at the clock, 3:30AM. I had to remind myself how much I loved this dog.
When I walked out the door the first thing I noticed was the eerie light streaks across the sky. What in the world was that? I'd never seen anything like it in my life!! I'd always been told when I hear hooves pounding I looked for zebras. Lord forbid there be a logical explanation for what I was now seeing. ALIENS!!! Yes, or course that's what I was witnessing!
I turned toward the house, fleeing for some manner in which to record this historical event. As I made my way to the house, I saw the true source of light. It was an outdoor light I had absent mindedly switched on as I walked outside the house. We were in the middle of a freezing fog.
The ice crystals combined with the artificial light had created a glowing brilliance surrounding me.
God in the form of ice crystals.Dancing, swirling, floating all around me. I was cocooned, embraced in artificial light and ice crystals. And God. Always God.
